Abstract

Guy de Maupassant’s book Pierre et Jean (1888) consists of two works in this order : “LeRoman”, his theoretical principles of novel, and “Pierre et Jean”, a fiction. These two worksare presented as a form of combination, whereas the contents of them have been often consideredas opposing to each other. Thus the objective of this study is to examine how thesetwo opposing works are put into one place, and complete a book as a whole. Although “LeRoman”, placed in the beginning of the book, is an explanatory text of the writer’s view onthe genre ‘novel’, this work is not considered as a satisfactory preface to explain the novel“Pierre et Jean”. There has been widespread agreement that such combination resulted notfrom artistic or literary reasons, but from financial or commercial reasons. In short, the significanceof “Le Roman” was questionable within the book Pierre et Jean. A thorough examination of the book, however, leads us to a conclusion that these twowritings hold the same idea on ‘novel’ :Maupassant believes that novel can only exist whenthere is a perpetual rivalry between two opposing points of views, without having any evidentvictory of one side. In other words, the conflict itself is the reason why the genre novel canexist and prolong. “Le Roman” is thus a manifesto for novel, while “Pierre et Jean” is a realizationof the manifesto, since the two protagonists (brothers) of the novel are doomed tocompete with each other. Therefore, this book Pierre et Jean can be read as a complete versionof manifesto, only when the two conflicting writings are combined into one as such.
