Abstract

This study investigates the effect of time constraints on the evaluation of scalar implicatures for Korean English learners. Seventy-two Korean students and twelve native English speakers participated in the study. The English proficiency of the Korean learners was evaluated through TOEIC scores and they were divided into advanced and beginner learners. A sentence evaluation task (SET) was employed and two experiments were conducted, one with a time constraint and one without, two weeks apart. The results indicate that there is no significant difference between Korean EFL learners and native English speakers in their interpretation of scalar implicature sentences in the untimed task. However, in the timed task, Korean English learners were found to be less able to draw discourse inferences from scalar implicature sentences than native English speakers. Furthermore, beginner learners with low English ability showed more difficulty than advanced learners with high English ability. By examining Korean English learners’ ability to interpret scalar implicatures with and without time constraints, this study not only provides insight into previously unexplored time constraint differences in L2 learners’ interpretation, but also explores the effect of time constraints as an experimental tool in psycholinguistics.
