본 논문은 다이글로시아에서 단일언어주의로의 언어적 전환과정 속에서 방언/지역어의 위치와 그 변화를 탐구하는 데 있다. 다이글로시아는 한 공동체 내의 언어가 공적인 것과 사적인 것, 성스런 것과 속된 것, 문어와 구어 등의 범주에 따라 상위변종과 하위변종으로 양층구조를 이루고 있는 언어적 상황을 나타내며 근대 이전의 언어 현상을 잘 보여준다. 하지만 근대 들어 이런 양층적 언어상황은 국어와 표준어의 언어정책에 의해 단일언어적 상황으로 변한다. 특히 표준어와 국어가 단일언어주의적 상황을 주도할 때, 국어와 표준어 사이의 간격을 자연스러운 것으로 메워주는 언어논리가 언문일치와 음성중심주의이다. 다이글로시아에서 단일언어주의로의 언어적 전환은 전근대에서 근대로의 언어적 전환을 상징하지만, 이런 전환은 지나치게 단절을 강조함으로써 근대 이전과 근대 사이에 지속하는 연속적인 언어적 흐름을 간과한다. 이 글은 다이글로시아에서 단일언어주의로의 전환이라는 언어적 근대의 이면에 전근대에서 이어져오는 언어적 실천들이 존재한다는 점을 설명하고, 이를 근거로 방언/지역어의 위치가 어떻게 달려져왔는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 소쉬르가 기호의 차이적 관계가 기호의 의미를 생산한다고 말했듯이, 언어 관계의 배치가 달라지면 언어의 의미에 대한 규정 또한 달라지게 된다. 방언/지역어 자체보다는 그것을 규정하던 역사적ㆍ사회적ㆍ언어적 관계가 시대에 따라 어떻게 달라졌는가를 살펴봄으로써 방언/지역어의 가능성을 검토해보고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the location of dialects/regional languages in the linguistic transition from diglossia to monolingualism. Diglossia refers to a linguistic structure in which the languages within a community are divided into higher and lower varieties according to categories such as the public and the private, the sacred and the secular, the written language and the spoken language, etc. However, in modern times, this two-layered linguistic situation is transformed into a monolingualism by the language policy of the national language and the standard language for the unity of the nation-state. In particular, when the standard language and the national language lead the monolingualism of the vernacular languages, the linguistic logic that fills the gap between the national language and the standard language as a natural thing is the agreement of the spoken and written languages and phonocentrism. It is often said that the linguistic transition from diglossia to monolingualism stands for the linguistic transition from premodern to modern, but this transition overemphasizes the break in the transition and overlooks the continuous linguistic practices between premodern and modern. This paper argues that behind the linguistic modernity of the shift from diglossia to monolingualism is a continuum of linguistic practices from the premodern period, and explores how the position of dialects/regional languages has been changed on this basis. As Saussure said that the differential relation of signs produces their meaning, different arrangements of linguistic signs lead to different relations of the meaning of language. We will examine the possibility of dialects/regional languages by looking at how the historical, social, and linguistic relations that define them have changed over time, rather than the dialects/regional languages themselves.
