Abstract

Abdelwahab Meddeb’s Talismano depicts the protagonist’s journey towards ultimate enlightenment through conversing with the best minds transcending period and space from the ancient to modern times and from China, the Arab world and Europe. Talismano which refers to a sort of charm that would dispel harmful advances in Arabic popular culture is a secretive code that only sorcerer or shaman could decipher. As the title represents, this work forms a forest of analogy that the protagonist describes as I must decode in a journey that is a maze. The protagonist relentlessly return to the fundamentals which translates into orality. The return to traditional orality allows the protagonist to attempt to come to terms with the fact that it is through the unrooting language of French that one’s identity is being expressed. The emphasis on the performative circumstances and the existence of both the storyteller and audience all serve to highlight oral characteristics. The emphasis on the moment of writing and the interactivity with readers, along with attempts of multiple modes of writing reveal how deep the author delves into expressing in words; and calligraphy is provided as the ultimate text that encompasses language, arts, religion and philosophy that has its roots in various cultures. What is essential in Meddeb’s literary world is going further from the consideration of tradition’s uniqueness and the emphasis of orality that stems from it to create a new mode of literature that combines orality and textuality.
