본 논문은 여러 난점들로 인해 여전히 시작 단계에 머물고 있는 북한의 외국문학 수용 및 번역에 대한 재고찰이며, 차후의 연구 지평 확대를 위한 전망과 제언을 담는 데 주안점을 두었다. 생산적인 검토를 위해, 연구자는 북한의 외국문학 번역과 관련된 기존 선행 연구들을 되짚어보고 그 의의를 재확인하는 것에서 출발했다. 북한에서 발간된 세계문학선집에 대한 자료 조사, 북한의 외국문학 번역에 대한 개관, 특정 작가 및 작품의 번역과 원문에 대한 논의 등이 이루어진 영문학, 독문학, 프랑스 문학 분야의 선행 연구들을 비판적으로 재검토함으로써, 어떤 외국문학작품들이 북한의 세계문학선집류에 포함되었으며 어떤 작가 및 작품들이 주목을 받았는지를 주로 살펴보았던 기존 연구의 흐름을 충실히 수정·보완할 수 있는 지점들을 파악하는 것이 본 논문의 주된 목표였다. 이러한 검토는 북한의 외국문학 수용사를 보다 넓게 파악하고 여기서 출발해 북한의 번역 작품 및 번역가의 지형도를 그리는 것을 지향하는 준비 작업이었다. 이를 위한 세부적인 고찰의 일환으로, 본 논문에서는 동아시아에서 가장 널리 수용·번역되었던 프랑스 작가 가운데 한 명인 알퐁스 도데가 북한에서는 어떻게 조명되었는지를 살펴보았다.
Abstract
This study is the starting point of continuous research related to North Korea's translation of foreign literature, which is still in the beginning stage due to various difficulties, and also focuses on providing prospects and suggestions for expanding future research. This paper first looked back at several previous studies related to North Korea's translation of foreign literature and reaffirmed their significance. We first critically reviewed previous studies in English literature, German literature, and French literature, including a survey of data on World Literature anthologies published in North Korea, an overview of North Korea's translation of foreign literature, and discussions on translations and original texts of specific authors and works. Through this consideration, we were able to reexamine the points that could faithfully revise and supplement the existing flow of research. In short, this study is aimed at understanding North Korea's reception history of foreign literature more broadly, and starting from there, to draw a topography of North Korea's translated works and translators. As part of a detailed consideration for this purpose, this paper examines how Alphonse Daudet, one of the most widely accepted and translated French writers in East Asia, was highlighted in North Korea.
