Abstract

The FA-50 is a supersonic aircraft developed by Korea and has the largest number of exports among the models developed by latecomers in the aviation industry. This study compared and analyzed the development process of the FA-50 with the F-5 fighter jet based on the path dependence theory and found that in order for the FA-50 to establish itself as a global model, it was necessary to target overseas markets and fix itself based on self-reinforcement and positive feedback. The F-5 was a lightweight and easy-to-maintain fighter and was shunned by the US Air Force, which preferred large-sized aircraft, but it became a world-class bestseller as it was mass distributed to allies through the US foreign military assistance program. In this process, the F-5's hands-on experience and positive feedback from operating countries formed a self-reinforcing mechanism, increasing path dependence. On the other hand, FA-50 was dominated by negative prospects after the US Air Force's elimination of the T-X project despite the support of the Korean government and KAI. However, with the recent resumption of exports to Poland and Malaysia due to the Russia-Ukraine war, it is showing a path-dependent development similar to that of F-5. In conclusion, in order for FA-50 to become the second F-5, it is inevitable to expand demand, and specifically, for this, it was suggested that various export expansion strategies such as targeting the markets of vulnerable countries using cost-effectiveness positions, second, re-challenge of the US market, third, single-seat development, and upgrade of existing aircraft are needed. Through this, FA-50 will be able to achieve lock-in in the market through self-reinforcement and positive feedback.
