초록

Korean Historiography Project was carried out to historically back up Japan’s assimilationism. As a part of the project, Japanese Government-General planned to compile a book‘ Joseonbandosa(朝鮮 半島史)’At first, the purpose of the project was to compile a unique Korean history in perfection from the viewpoint of Japan. In line with the purpose, the book ‘Hankooktongsa(韓國痛史)’was published and circulated so as to justify what Japan assimilated Korea. The project was focused on three aims. First, it aimed at proving that Japanese and Koreans are of the same race, that is, two countries had interacted with each other and also their people has emigrated to each other and therefore they had been of the same blood at an age. Second, it aimed at maintaining that Korean people, who had suffered from the rise and fall of the dynasty, would be free from suffering as Korea was assimilated by Japan. Third, it aimed at compiling historical facts that are deserving of the public reliability. Herein,‘ the public’means Japanese historians, and ‘reliability’is based on ancient records related to Japan’s ruling over Korea and the interaction between two countries. Such goals were naturally reflected in the contents of the book. The project was carried out in earnest from July 1915, under the leadership of ‘Jung-Chu-Won’the consultative committee of Japanese Government-General after taking over historical data from an affiliated bureau. The project was scheduled to be completed within two years, but was carried out until the end of 1924, that is, for about 10 years. After many complications, the parts of the book was classified into six, that is, the Pre-History Three Stages, Ancient Times, Three States, Unified Silla Dynasty, Joseon Dynasty and Modern Times. In addition, its contents and supplement were detailedly planned. Writers were appointed and historical data were collected, but just two-thirds of the final draft was completed. Afterward the draft was not published in the name of Japanese Government-General, but was recognized as several scholars’ achievements.
