Abstract
This paper analyzes displaced Koreans who flowed into China during the Japanese invasion of Joseon (壬辰倭亂) from 1592 to 1598. These immigrants form a watershed in the history of Koreans’ immigration to China. Korean refugees appeared in large numbers during the Japanese invasion due to war and famine. Some among them crossed the border for safety or entrusted themselves to the camp of Ming China’s troops in Joseon and later entered China when the Chinese army withdrew from Joseon. The Ming army received many Koreans into their camps and took them when returning to China for such reasons as relief, convenience of action, supply of soldiers, and reinforcement of military forces. And some Koreans entered China due to the pressure and enticement of Ming troops. The Joseon government endeavored to gain permission for Koreans to leave Ming camps and to prevent them from crossing the border. But its efforts were fruitless because of the personal conditions of Koreans in Ming camps and the lukewarm cooperation of the Ming army. It seems that more than 10,000 wandering Koreans entered China during the Japanese invasion. They resided in Liaoyang (遼陽),Qianshan (千山), Zhenjiang (鎭江), Guangning (廣寧), Gaoping (高平),Xingshan (杏山), Shanhaiguan (山海關), Tongzhou (通州), Nanjing (南京), Yangzhou (揚州), Dengzhou (登州), Hangzhou (杭州), and Sichuan (四川). Many of them lived in Liaoyang and Guangning. Slaves from Japan who were taken as prisoners of war lived in Guangning. They earned a living by begging, or by serving in a Chinese home or as a soldier at the border. Sometimes an individual used his specialty to serve in an individual business. Among these instances, being a soldier was used as a short cut to success. While all wandering Koreans experienced homesickness, they showed many differences due to their individual conditions.
