구미 학계의 ‘청조(淸朝)’ 인식과 서술 - 『케임브리지 중국사 9권, 제2부 1800년까지의 청조』를 중심으로

이 글은 『케임브리지 중국사(The Cambridge History of China)』 시리즈 중, 2016년에 출판된 9권 제2부 1800년까지의 청조(The Ch’ing Dynasty to 1800)를분석 대상으로 삼아 구미 학계가 청사를 보는 관점을 심도 있게 규명했다. 이를 통해 구미 학계의 중국사 인식과 한국사 서술의 특징이 무엇인지, 그리고 앞으로 그것을 어떻게 수정하고 개선해나갈 수 있는지에 대한 실마리를 제공하고자 했다. 전통과 권위를 자랑하는 『케임브리지 중국사』는 구미 학계의 중국사 인식을비추는 거울로서, 중국과 한국의 연구자와 독자들에게도 적지 않은 무게감을 가진다. 이 글은 특히 새로운 청사 연구 경향인 ‘신청사’와의 관계, 그리고 청사에서 ‘단절’과 ‘연속’의 주제가 가지는 의미 등에 대해 한국 학계의 입장에서 건설적 균열과 비판적 시각을 더하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이를 위해 총 15장의 내용을 크게 ‘중국’사, ‘동아시아’사, 그리고 학술·문화사 등 세 부분으로 나누어 분석했다. 각 장의 주요 내용과 핵심 논지를 정리하는한편, 해당 주제에 관한 저자와 한국 학계의 최신 연구성과까지 최대한 섭렵하여 제시했다.
Abstract
This article is a critical examination of The Cambridge History of China, Vol. 9, Part Two, The Ch’ing Dynasty to 1800, which was recently published in 2016. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, it will provide an in-depth analysis of how the American and European academia perceives the history of the Qing. Second, it will also examine how the work understands the Joseon-Qing relationship and its perspective on Joseon The Cambridge History of China series, with its long tradition and well-established authority, serve as a mirror to understand the American and European academia’s perspective of the Chinese History. Thus, it holds a significant position on both Korean and Chinese readers, from professional researchers to the public. In this article, based on the Korean scholarship on the Qing, I will primarily focus on the relationship between this work and the so-called New Qing History, the significance of both “continuity” and “change” within the fields of Qing studies. For this review, I have reorganized the fifteen chapters into three broad themes, which also are the three sections of this article. Namely, “Chinese History,” “East Asian History,” and “Scholarship and Culture in the Qing.” Each section will summarize each chapter of the work, examine the previous scholarship that formed the chapters themselves, and introduce how the recent Korean scholarship has engaged on each theme.
