Abstract
This study investigated and collected various editions of Cheonha Gogeum Daechong Pyeollamdo , created by Kim Su Hong in the late Joseon period, to organize their genealogical relationships. Additionally, we compared Kim Su-hong’s map with other maps and geographical works produced during the same period to examine possible prototype maps. According to the research results, a total of 12 different editions remain, comprising 4 woodblock prints and 8 hand-copied prints. Among them, the woodblock print “Byeong-U(丙午) Edition-1,” kept in Korean Christian Museum at Soongsil University, appears to be the original edition or the closest to the original edition, while “Byeong-U Edition-2,” kept in Seoul Museum of History, is a direct reproduction of the former. The woodblock print “Gap-Ja(甲子) Edition,” held at NGII’s National Map Museum of Korea, is likely based on “yeong-U Edition-2” but may have referred to “Byeong-U Edition-1” to correct errors. Lastly, “Byeong-U Edition-3,” colltected in Tenri central library, Tenri University, Japan, is presumed to have been created between “Byeong-U Edition-2” and “Gap-Ja Edition.” According to previous research, Cheonha Gogeum Daechong Pyeollamdo , is a map produced using China’s “Hyeongseung Do(形勝 圖)” as a prototype. Although Kim Su-hong’s map and “Hyeongseung Do” superficially exhibit a highly similar Sinocentric world map with traditional characteristics, a meticulous examination reveals significant differences between the two. Firstly, there is a distinct contrast in the size of the maps, leading to variations in the volume of historical and geographical information and their representation methods. Furthermore, differences are evident in the usage of symbols, the inclusion and notation of administrative divisions in the Ming Dynasty, and the portrayal of boundary lines. Additionally, there are notable disparities in the depiction of topography in the central region, as well as in the content and trends related to historical and geographical information. Lastly, there are substantial differences in the portrayal and perception of neighboring countries and powers. These differences have demonstrated that Kim Su Hong utilized various maps and geographical resources when creating the map. Through content comparisons and an examination of Kim Su-hong’s life, we can infer the existence of seven possible prototype materials. Firstly, the map of Shuomo TU (朔漠圖) from Luo Hongxian(羅洪先)’s Guangyu TU (廣輿圖). Secondly, maps similar to Ershibaxiufenyehuang minggeshengdiyu ZongTu (二十八宿分野皇明各省地輿總圖) included in the Ming Dynasty’s practical guidebook Wanbaoquanshu (萬寶全書). Thirdly, the Buddhist map Sihaihuayi ZongTu (四海華夷總圖) found in the Tushubian (圖書編). Fourthly, the “Yugong Tu(禹貢圖)” maps from the Song Dynasty onwards. Fifthly, geographical works from the Ming Dynasty such as Wanbaoquanshu (萬寶全書) and Mingyitongzhi (明一統 志). Sixthly, Western-style world maps. Lastly, Zhongguosandagan Tu (中 國三代幹圖) included in Sancaituhui (三才圖會). In this study, efforts were made to investigate and collect as many editions of the Cheonha Gogeum Daechong Pyeollamdo as possible, but it is acknowledged that editions not uncovered by the author may still exist. Additionally, the study primarily focused on woodblock editions, examining their content, characteristics, and lineage, while recognizing the need for a more in-depth analysis of manuscript editions. Furthermore, it is acknowledged that there may be additional reference materials beyond the aforementioned original sources. These shortcomings and challenges will remain as tasks for future research.
