Abstract
This article investigates the theoretical background and practical development of the discourse on the “independence of Manchuria”(滿洲獨自化) before and after the establishment of Manchukuo(滿洲國). After the Russo-Japanese War(露日戰爭), Japan expanded its concessions in Manchuria and institutionalized historical and geographical research through the South Manchuria Railway Company(南滿洲鐵道株式會社) and its Research Department of Manchuria and Korea(滿鮮歷史地理調査部). These academic projects sought to define Manchuria as a region distinct from China, emphasizing “regional uniqueness” and “ethnic distinctiveness” to legitimize Japanese expansion. Leading scholars such as Shiratori Kurakichi(白鳥庫吉), Inaba Iwakichi(稻葉岩吉), and Yano Jin’ichi(矢 野仁一) conceptualized Manchuria as an autonomous historical entity and systematized its past outside of the Chinese historical framework. With the establishment of Manchukuo in 1932, Zheng Xiaoxu(鄭 孝胥) issued the Manzhouguo Jianguo Suwonyang Shilüe(「滿洲國建 國溯源史略」). While drawing upon existing Japanese scholarship, this document marked a significant shift by identifying the Sushen(肅 愼) as the primordial ancestors of the Manchus. This innovation departed from the earlier genealogical sequence of Goguryeo(高句 麗)–Balhae(渤海)–Jin(金)–Qing(清) and reflected both the intellectual legacy of the Qing dynasty’s Qinding Manzhou Yuanliu Kao (『欽定滿 洲源流考』) and the influence of Japanese historiography. As an official government document, the Suwonyang Shilüe was intended to legitimize Manchukuo’s sovereignty and identity, later forming the basis of works such as Inaba Iwakichi’s Manshūkoku-shi tsūron (『滿 洲國史通論』). This article argues that the Suwonyang Shilüe articulated the idea of “Manchurianism for the Manchus”(滿洲人の滿洲主義), not as a narrow ethnonationalist doctrine monopolized by a single group, but as an inclusive concept embracing all peoples residing in Manchuria and Mongolia–including Han Chinese, Mongols, and others-on the basis of equality. By redefining the historical and ethnic foundations of “Manchurians,” Manchukuo sought to present itself as a modern nation–state with legitimate territory, sovereignty, and people. These discourses became the foundation of Manchukuo historiography(滿洲國史學) and developed further into the broader field of “Manchukuo Studies”(滿洲國學), shaping the institutionalized historical consciousness of Manchukuo within the intellectual landscape of modern East Asia.
