Abstract
The Yonghae Tomb Complex on Yongdu Mountain, widely known as the Yongdusan Gobungun, enabled concrete research on Balhae royal tomb culture following the publication of its official report in 2025. Using tombs with clearly established burial dates, such as those of Empress Hyoui (775), Princess Jeonghye (792), and Empress Sunmok (829), as reference points, the attributes of other tombs were analyzed to trace patterns of change. Through a comparison of associated burial goods, the chronological sequence of the tombs was inferred, confirming that the construction and occupation of the Yonghae Tomb Complex occurred over roughly 55 years, from the late eighth century to the mid-ninth century. This period corresponds to the reigns of the direct royal descendants of King Mun. Considering the tomb structures, dating of associated relics, and the spatial arrangement of the tombs, it is tentatively proposed that Tomb M10 corresponds to King Seong (Daehwayeo), Tomb M14 to King Gang (Daesungrin), the unexcavated site on Platform 3 to King Jeong (Daewonyu), Tomb M8 to King Hee (Dae eonui), and Tomb M2 to King Gan (Daemyeongchung). After King Mun’s death, his successors were interred in the distant Yonghae Tomb Complex even when they died in Sanggyeongseong, the capital. Considering the historical context, King Seong’s accession supported by national officials, King Gang’s efforts to consolidate authority, and the unstable political conditions from King Jeong to King Gan, it is believed that King Mun’s descendants chose to be buried in the complex and presided over the rituals to assert their legitimacy and bolster royal power. The term Jinreungdae, recorded in the epitaph of Empress Hyoui, refers to the royal mausoleum of King Mun’s lineage. It served both as a visible expression of royal legitimacy and as a political space embodying and guaranteeing the successor’s authority.
