Abstract
This article has been supported by the ‘Organized study for the Balhae Records Utility project,’ launched in correlation with the Northeast Asian History Foundation’s publication: The Balhae History Sources Collection-References from Korean Sources (vol.1&2), and References from Chinese Sources (vol.1). For the occasion, this author chose two of the most renowned Balhae figures, who led most productive and vibrant lives in the Khitan Liao and Jurchen Chin societies of China, after the fall of Balhae of course. Examining all kinds of records and references for these figures led this author to determine whether or not all extant relevant data regarding them (and other Balhae figures as well) were all listed without exception in previous publications. Examined in Chapter 2 is a Liao-period(遼代) Balhae figure Goh Mo-han(高謨翰) and his descendants, while in Chapter 3 Jang Ho(張 浩), a Chin-period(金代) Balhae figure, and his descendants are examined. Reconstructing all these historical figures’ footsteps and life history indeed revealed that there were considerable amount of data left out, and not included in the previously published source collections. Various records of a same event or the same individual tend to vary in terms of details, so all these references, if properly disclosed and made available and accessible to researchers, would undoubtedly contribute to Balhae historical studies overall. Especially, personal tomb epitaphs and monumental inscriptions provide us with detailed information which usually do not appear in the official histories(正史). In the future, to revitalize researches in Balhae history, records of this sort should also be compiled and translated.
