다문화주의와 한국인의 국민정체성: 설문조사 결과를 중심으로

본 논문은 2008년 5월에 실시한 부산지역 대학생 1,000여명을 대상으 로 한“다민족·다문화 사회에 대한 의식조사”자료를 이용하여, 한국인들 이 가지고 있는 국민정체성과 다민족·다문화주의에 대한 지향성과의 관련 성에 대해 알아본다. 일반적으로 국민정체성 중에서 시민적 요인들을 중시 하면 다문화사회에 대해서 개방성과 수용성이 높다고 알려져 있다. 연구결과 부산지역 대학생들은 순혈주의나 단일민족의식을 강하게 가지고 있지는 않았으며, 민족적 요인들 보다는 시민적 요인을 중시하는 사람이 많 았다. 그러나 시민적 요인을 중요시하는 사람이 다문화사회에 개방적일 것 이라는 가설은 통계적으로 유의성을 발견할 수 없었다. 이러한 결과는 외국 인 이주자에 대한 판단이 여전히 복합적이라는 것으로 해석할 수 있는데, 실제적인 접촉과 노동시장에서의 경쟁이 외국인에 대한 부정적 이미지를 강 화함으로써 개방성을 약화시키는 경향이 있는 것으로 추론된다
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between Korean’s national identity and direction toward multiculturalism. Generally, if we attach importance to civic factors among the national identity, it has been known to have a high level of openness and receptiveness toward multiculturalism. The results show that Busan college students have neither much of the‘ pure blood principle’nor the ‘racially homogeneous national consciousness’, and tend to consider civic factors than ethnic factors. However, the hypothesis that those who attach importance to civic factors tend to have an openmind toward multicultural society is not supported by empirical evidence presented. As a result, this indicates most of Koreans have a two-faced attitude toward foreign migrants, and the contact and competition in the labor market may strengthen the negative images of foreign migrants so that it degenerates the perception of openness to multiculturalism.
