Abstract

This study proposes a novel data processing and visualization technique designed to substantially improve the real-time interactive performance of large-scale spatial datasets. The scope of this study is limited to two-dimensional vector spatial data. The proposed approach combines GPU-based batch rendering, view frustum culling, spatial indexing, and GPU-based object picking techniques. In the data preprocessing phase, the bounding box for each feature is generated and a spatial index structure is built to eliminate unnecessary computations during later rendering and picking processes. Subsequently, by using real-time vertex transformation and a merge buffer via GPU shaders, multiple features are rendered in a single draw call, which significantly reduces CPU overhead. Additionally, view frustum culling is applied to remove features that are not visible on the screen during the rendering process. In the object selection stage, candidate features are quickly filtered using the spatial index, and a ray-casting algorithm implemented with GPU compute shaders checks whether a feature lies within the selection area. Experimental results confirmed that the proposed technique achieves superior response times and rendering performance compared to leading GIS tools, thereby enhancing the user experience and enabling high-performance GIS for real-time analysis and visualization of large-scale spatial data.
