Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the emotions and relational meanings reflected in happy memories recalled by young children and their fathers, and to provide foundational insights into the structure of emotional interactions in father–child relationships. Participants included 50 four-year-old children enrolled in early childhood education institutions in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea, and their fathers. Data were collected through drawings and semi-structured interviews with the children, and open-ended written responses and in-depth interviews with the fathers. Qualitative content analysis revealed that children perceived happiness primarily through immediate and sensory enjoyment during play and daily interactions, which fostered emotional security and attachment. In contrast, fathers recalled their experiences with complex emotions such as joy, inspiration, pride, and responsibility, and interpreted them in relation to parental identity, life meaning, and children’s growth. Furthermore, while children constructed their memories in a present-oriented and intuitive manner, fathers reflected on their experiences with an emphasis on relational continuity and meaning. These findings highlight developmental and role-related differences in emotional expression and meaning-making. They underscore the importance of supporting fathers’ emotional engagement in parenting to enrich family relationships and foster children’s emotional development and relational competence.
