Abstract

This study explored the meaning of home through the experience of living in supportive housing for people with severe physical disabilities. To this end, this study included nine people with severe physical disabilities who had previously resided in residential accommodation and then moved into supportive housing. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and participant observation. The themes that emerged as a result of the study were 'a free sanctuary with my name', 'a space where I feel stuffy, lonely and anxious', 'a place where I proactively use services', 'a place where I am made to feel small and interfered with', and 'the bridgehead to the outside world through independent life'. By living in supportive housing, people with severe physical disabilities experienced a private space where they felt loneliness and anxiety at the same time, even though they felt freedom that they had never had before, and a public space where they had to be mindful of service providers while proactively utilizing social services through supportive housing. Through the experience of living in supportive housing located in the community, they came to live independent lives with a clear awareness of the life they wanted, and through this, they came to mean home as a bridgehead to the outside world. The implication of this study is that supportive housing has multiple senses of place as private and public spaces. It also revealed that disabled people are the subjects who actively produce homes through ‘making crip place’.
