포토보이스를 활용한 중증신체장애인의 사적 공간으로써 지원주택 거주 경험에 관한 연구

A Study on the Residential Experience of Severely Physically Disabled People in Supportive Housing as a Private Space - Using Photovoice Method

초록

본 연구는 지원주택에 거주하는 중증신체장애인의 거주 경험을 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 시설에 거주했다가 퇴소하여 지원주택에 입주한 8명의 중증신체장애인과 포토보이스를 활용한 인터 뷰를 시행하였다. 분석은 반복적 비교분석법을 활용하였으며, 그 결과 ‘오롯이 느끼는 나만의 독립공간’, ‘지속되는 외로움과 답답함’, ‘내가 이끄는 삶’과 같은 3개의 주제가 도출되었다. 중증신 체장애인들은 지원주택에서 편안함과 안정감을 느끼며 자기의 역사를 지닌 물건들로 사적 공간을 의식적으로 만들었음을 이야기하였다. 또한 여전히 시설 거주 때와 마찬가지로 비공식적 관계와의 단절에서 비롯되는 외로움이 지속되었고 장애인 몸을 고려하지 않은 주택 구조 때문에 답답함도 경험하였다. 하지만 중증신체장애인들은 지원주택에서 주도적으로 시간을 관리하고 공간을 자기 몸과 조율하면서 일상을 주도하였다. 이러한 경험을 기반으로 지역사회에서 소속감을 느끼는 장소를 만들고 사람들과의 마주침을 추구하였다. 이와 같은 결과는 중증신체장애인들이 지원주택을 통해 자율성을 확보하고 사적 공간으로서 통제력을 확보하고 있음을 나타내는 것이다. 또한 지역사 회에 소속된 내부자로서 지향하는 모습을 보여주는 것이다. 이에 따라 지원주택 공간에 대한 통제력 확대를 위해 주택의 물리적 구조개선과 서비스 제공자와 동거인에 의해 야기되는 사적 공간의 축소화 개선, 그리고 지역사회에서의 관계 형성을 위한 역할 마련 등을 제언하였다.

Abstract

This study explores the residential experience of severely physically disabled people in supportive housing as a private space. To this end, interviews were conducted using photo-voice with eight severely disabled people who had previously resided in residential accommodation and then moved into supportive housing. The contents were analyzed using the repeated comparative analysis method, and as a result, three themes were derived: ‘a space of my own that I feel alone’, ‘continuing loneliness and frustration’, and ‘a life that I lead’. Severely physically disabled people said that they felt comfortable and secure in the supportive housing and that they consciously created private spaces with objects that had their own history. In addition, they continued to feel loneliness due to the disconnection from informal relationships, just like when they lived in residential accommodation, and they also experienced frustration due to the housing structure that did not take into account the disabled person’s body. However, people with severe physical disabilities proactively managed their time in the supportive housing and led their daily lives by coordinating the space with their own bodies. Based on these experiences, they created places where they felt a sense of belonging in the community and pursued encounters with people. These results indicate that people with severe physical disabilities are securing autonomy and control as private spaces through the supportive housing. They also show their aspirations as insiders belonging to the community. Accordingly, in order to expand control over the supportive housing space, it was suggested to improve the physical structure of the housing, improve the reduction of private spaces caused by service providers and cohabitants, and establish roles for forming relationships in the community.
