Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative importance and the effects of parent-child communication styles and stress coping behaviors on depression in normal children. Parent-child communication style, Stress copying behaviors scale, Children's depression inventory were administered to 984 students of elementary schools(6th graders) who are living in Daegu city. Among the subtypes of parent-children communication styles and stress copying strategies, the most important thing that can predict children's depression were find out active and passive copying strategy, and these two factors explained 39.7% of the whole depression. Especially, passive copying behavior was the most significant predictable factor of children depression. Someone who has problematic communication style with their parent, and has passive, aggressive copying style will likely to be more depressed, however someone who has open communication style with his/her father, and has active, social support seeking copying behaviors will likely to be less depressed. Passive copying strategy is the factor to modulate depression when children have open communication with father, and active copying strategy is the factor to modulate depression when children have closed communication with mother. The implications for prevention of depression in children and suggestions for future study were discussed.
