Abstract

The purpose of the study is to confirm the effect of empathetic perspective-taking intervention on aggression and permissive attitude towards bullying in elementary school students. Seventy-five 6th grade students in Seoul participated in the study. All participants were asked to watch a video about school violence and they were randomly divided to three groups, emotion contagion intervention group, empathetic perspective-taking and emotion contagion intervention group, and untreated control group. And then, their level of permissive attitudes toward bullying and aggression were measured. After approximately three weeks, their level of permissive attitudes towards bullying and frequency of offending in school between the experiment and the follow-up test were measured again. The results were as follows. Only empathetic perspective-taking intervention group showed significant decrease in aggression. However, both of empathetic perspective-taking intervention group and emotion contagion group displayed significantly lower permissive attitudes towards bullying compared to control group. After three weeks, only empathetic perspective-taking intervention group showed lower levels of permissive attitudes. Also, empathetic perspective-taking intervention group reported significantly lower frequency of offending in school than emotion contagion and control groups.
