Abstract
The purpose of this study is to see the effect of ruminative mode on the interpersonal problem solving for depressed college students. For this study, 72 depressed college students from Seoul and Gyeonggi and who had BDI score over 15 participated in the experiment in which they were randomly assigned into three groups, concrete rumination group, abstract rumination group, and control group. During the experiment, each participant first completed the rumination scale and MEPS which measured the interpersonal problem solving of depressed college students as pre-test and did it again as post-test after the experimental intervention for each group. For statistical method, paired t-test was used for each group to confirm the manipulation of rumination. As for confirming the manipulation of ruminative mode, independent t-test was used to analyze the score evaluated by experts through concreteness scale. Moreover, ANCOVA was utilized to analyze the score measured in MEPS. As a result, concrete rumination group had higher interpersonal problem solving than both abstract rumination group and control group. This indicates that the concrete rumination helps the depressed college students to improve their interpersonal problem solving. For counseling field, this study underscores the need of applying intervention with concrete rumination in order to improve the interpersonal problem solving of depressed college students. Furthermore, the limitation and suggestion for the further study were discussed.
