Abstract
This study aims to suggest a concept for the term “Counselor self-advocacy” in order to better support professional counselors who seek deeper and more accurate understanding of the inner world of their clients. To do this, 'Counselor self-advocacy' was defined through analyzing the past relevant studies. The authors suggests that counselor self-advocacy is defined as the counselor’s basic right to support and advocate for themselves and is manifested as the counselor’s efforts to thoroughly understand and support their clients. The counselor’s efforts of self-advocating can also be a model for the client self-advocacy. Furthermore, this study confirmed its importance and need for counselor advocacy through examining individual case studies, then explored skills, knowledge, and technical skills needed for effective self-advocacy, along with exploring professional advocacy capacity. The authors conceptualized the process of practicing counselor self-advocacy as “improving advocacy” after consulting with the American Counseling Association (ACA)’s advocacy competency model. Finally, the study presents recommendations based on the study’s results. In the midst of an emerging discourse regarding social justice advocacy counseling in Korea, this study is meaningful that raises interest the importance and need of counselor self-advocacy, and suggested the further relevant studies.
