Abstract
This study used the Consensual Qualitative Research method to explore South Korean counselors’ experiences in developing social justice advocacy competencies. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 9 counselors with strong advocacy competencies and low implicit gender stereotypes. Six domains with 22 categories and 18 subcategories emerged. The domains were “becoming interested in social justice,” “developing advocacy competencies,” “difficulties while pursuing social justice,” “coping with difficulties,” “changes in life after pursuing social justice,” and “suggestions for future social justice oriented counseling,” After finding an interest in social justice through diverse experiences, participants developed their advocacy competencies via seeking knowledge, practicing social justice, self-reflecting, and receiving guidance from mentors. Results also revealed that self-reflecting, publicizing social justice issues, and interacting with colleagues helped participants overcome various in/external difficulties along the way. Participants reported that advocating for social justice resulted in changes in both society and their personal lives. The implications, limitations, and suggestions for further research were discussed.
