Abstract

This study aims to provide basic data for supervision research by exploring how supervisors develop through the analysis of the development process of master supervisors. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted on 15 master supervisors selected by peer nomination and the data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach (Strauss & Corbin, 1990). In the results of the categorical analysis, 60 concepts, 31 subcategories, and 13 categories were derived. The core category of the master supervisor’s development process was summarized as ‘A transcendental horizon that expands as contemplation and enlightenment deepen and cycle together’. Through process analysis, the development of master supervisors was outlined as a five-stage process: observation, reflection, insight, expansion, and integration. This process was a continuous process of deepening and circularity, rather than one-time event. This study is meaningful in that it provided knowledge and data on the developmental process of supervisors in an integrated manner. Furthermore, by identifying common factors in the developmental process of master supervisors, this study has counseling implications in building an initial theory of supervisor development in Korea and providing a basis for training and educational contents developing for supervisor development.
