Abstract
The purpose of this study is to comprehensively explore and deeply understand the experience of fentanyl addiction, a type of narcotic, by analyzing the phenomenon of fentanyl addiction through grounded theory and developing a substantive theory. For this purpose, data were collected through in-depth, one-on-one interviews with eight participants. The collected data were analyzed using the grounded theory methodology of Corbin & Strauss (2015), and 13 categories, 29 subcategories, and 82 concepts were derived as the results. The analysis revealed the core category of “a vicious cycle of temporary comfort and extreme physical pain.” This represents the fentanyl addiction process, in which initial use provides a sense of comfort, but withdrawal symptoms result in excruciating physical pain, likened to the sensation of being cut with a knife, which intensifies dependence on fentanyl. Based on the analysis of fentanyl addiction within psychosocial contexts, this study presented theoretical implications for understanding fentanyl addiction. It also suggested counseling implications regarding attachment trauma, which identified as a causal condition of fentanyl addiction. Furthermore, the study proposed practical implications for fentanyl addiction counseling, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation education based on the outcomes observed in the interactions of central phenomena.
