본 논문은 간재학파(艮齋學派) 문인인 송운 정운한(松雲 鄭雲翰, 1890~1971)의 생애와 학문에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 정운한은 일제 강점기로부터 산업화로 이어지는 대한민국의 격변기에 간재학파의 절의(節義)와 수도정신(守道精神)을 실천하는 삶을 살았던 인물이다. 정운한은 간재 전우와 석농 오진영에게 수학했으며, 그의 학문 정신은 유가의 ‘경(敬)’과 스승 간재가 제창한 ‘성존(性尊)’의 가르침에 기초하고 있다. 그는 서구 물질문명의 영향으로 욕망이 만연한 시대에, 유가 경전 공부를 통해 사사로움과 사악함을 막고 이익을 멀리하며 인의를 실천하는 학문의 수양을 강조했다. 출처의리에 대해서는 도를 구현한다는 명분만으로 거취를 함부로 하여 낭패를 보는 것보다는, 예(禮)와 의(義)를 법도로 삼아서 자신의 도를 지켜나가는 것이 더 중요하다고 생각했다. 이는 간재학파의 ‘자정(自靖)’의 수도정신을 그대로 이어받은 것이라 하겠다. 성리설에 대해서는 중화(中和)는 모두 비(費;작용)로서, 성(性)이 중화의 근거라고 하였다. 또 미발 상태에도 기(氣)는 존재하며, 기에는 청탁(淸濁)이 있으므로 미발에도 선악의 뿌리는 있지만, 리(理)의 선함은 일찍이 쉼이 없으므로 성을 통해 이발(已發) 즈음에 악의 싹을 잘라서 기질을 순선하게 변화시켜야 한다고 주장했다. 이처럼 그는 ‘불리(不離)’의 관점에서 심성과 선악의 문제를 파악하면서, 성이 심의 우위에 있어야 한다는 간재학파의 성리설을 계승하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper examines the life and thought of Jeong-Woonhan, a scholar of the Ganjae School. He lived a life of loyalty and morality during the upheaval of the Republic of Korea. His academic spirit is based on the teachings of ‘Respect(Jing, 敬)’ of Confucianism and ‘Human nature is high(性尊)’ by his teacher Ganjae Jeon-Woo . He emphasized the discipline of learning to prevent privateity and wickedness and to practice good faith through studying the Confucian scriptures in an era where desires were prevalent due to the influence of Western material civilization. As for the loyalty to go out or step back into the world, he thought it was more important to protect one's principles by using courtesy and righteousness as a law than to make one's actions recklessly fail just because one implements the province. As for Neo-Confucianism, he identifies the problems of mind and good and evil through terms of an inseparable ralation of Li and Qi, and inherits the Neo-Confucianism of the Ganjae School that Human nature is high while mind is low the deliberation.
