Abstract

This article is to review Yulgok's philosophical thought from a modern point of view, focusing on the specific topic of glocalism. In this article, after reviewing the relational significance of the glocal spirit, the cases of global localization, the issue of delocalization of academic discourse in the global knowledge field at the time, and the subjective awareness of glocalism and the communication problem of transboundary ideology, the philosophical significance and tasks of Yulgok's glocalism were sequentially examined. ‘Glocalism’ is a combination word created by combining the two concepts of ‘global’ and ‘local’. It is a concept that has the characteristics of ‘glocal’ formed in terms of being both global and local at the same time. It is very suggestive that the simultaneous co-existence of ‘global’ and ‘local’ contained in ‘glocal’ has the possibility of close connection with the philosophy of the ‘Mysterious Relation between Li and Qi (理氣之妙)’, the core of Yulgok’s philosophy. The spirit of humanism that values human beings is inherent in glocalism in the sense of Yulgok. In addition, the moral significance requested from the perspective of civilization theory is confirmed, and when paying attention to Hyangyak (鄕約) advocated by Yulgok, it is meaningful in providing various implications in terms of modern local self-government management. In short, it is judged that the establishment of a responsible relationship between 'me' and 'us' and between 'us' and 'me', which is confirmed in the characteristics of Yulgok's glocalism, can act as a sustainability that enables mutual coexistence between the subject and the other. These prospects remain hopeful.
