Abstract

The scholarship of Horon(湖論) began to take shape through a series of academic debates centered around Han Won-jin(韓元震, 1682∼1751) and Yi Gan(李柬, 1677∼1727) under Kwon Sang-ha(權尙夏, 1641∼1721), who was considered Song Si-yeol(宋時烈)’s greatest disciple. Later, its positions became clear as debates continued with Park Pil-ju(朴弼周, 1665∼1748) and Yi Jae(李縡, 1680∼1746) of Nakron. After the death of the main protagonist of the Horak Debate, the successors of Horon(湖論) and Nakron(洛論) formed the core of the Sipa(時派) and Byeokpa(僻派) factions, which had split from the Noron, creating an antagonistic situation. By the early 19th century, the Byeokpa faction, centered around the successors of Horon, had fallen, and as its major writers became embroiled in controversies over loyalty, betrayal, and heresy, Horon's influence rapidly declined. As the fall of the Byeokpa and the subsequent academic disputes led to the rapid weakening of Horon, its succession was concretized around a group of writers who claimed to be Han Won-jin’s private students, and this trend continued until the first half of the 20th century. Drawing on prior research, I aimed to examine the formation of Horon in the early 18th century, which took shape based on Yulgok(栗谷)’s teachings, and the subsequent succession of the Horon academic tradition. This study first clarifies the scholarly lineage centered on Yulgok and identifies the scholars who emerged from their early Horon studies, such as Han Won-jin and Yun Bong-gu, who established the academic identity of Horon. In subsequent studies, I will outline the succession of the Horon academic tradition, focusing on key figures who continued the Horon academic tradition from the mid-18th century onward, and their academic views and activities. I will examine the weakening of Horon academic traditions due to political upheaval and the subsequent succession of Horon academic traditions. Furthermore, I will examine the resurgence of Horon academic traditions, particularly in the Hoseo region, in the mid- to late-19th century and the formation of new ones, thereby presenting the Horon academic traditions that continued into the first half of the 20th century.
