Abstract

In general, the Yulgok school of thought differentiated into Horon and Nakron in the 18th century, and after the mid-19th century, it led to the formation and development of various schools, forming the center of modern and contemporary Korean Confucianism. However, this change in the topography of Yulgok's academic lineage took place in the process of the academic activities of major scholars with various academic origins. However, so far, the academic community has not actively conducted research on major scholars active in the process of changing the topography of Yulgok's academic lineage from the late 18th century to the first half of the 19th century. Keeping in mind this research trend, this paper examines the academic activities of Kangjae Song Chi-gyu(剛齋 宋穉圭, 1759~1838), a representative scholar who had great academic influence within the Yulgok school of thought from the late 18th century to the first half of the 19th century. And through this review, I tried to examine his status in the history of thought in relation to his academic influence and changes in the topography of Yulgok's academic lineage. Song Chi-gyu, who had been out of the spotlight of researchers until now, inherited the Nakron school of thought that originated from Gwajae Kim Jeong-muk(過齋 金正默) of the Hoseo region, which is distinct from the Nakron school of Kim Chang-hyeop(金昌協). And based on the academic tendency of Nakron, he maintained an academic attitude that sought to avoid confrontation and conflict between Horon and Nakron, and had a considerable influence on later scholars. In particular, he continued to associate with Yulgok scholars in the Yeongnam region from the time of his academic formation, and had a certain influence on the succession and continuation of Yulgok scholars in this region. And while he began his lecture activities in earnest, he continued to associate with major Nakron scholars, including Hong Jik-pil(洪直弼), and produced a large number of disciples throughout the country, including in the Hoseo and Honam regions, where he was based. In that his continued academic exchanges and academic activities, such as lectures, had a nationwide impact, it can be said to have been a turning point in the change in the topography of Yulgok's academic lineage since the mid-to-late 19th century.
