초록

This paper explicates the phenomenon of English extraposition by scrutinizing the derivation process within the framework of Minimalism Theory. This process involves merge, feature checking, and labeling by solving the locality problem. It also argues that the intended meaning becomes manifest when the probe accurately verifies features with the target component, highlighting the importance of one-to-one correspondence for full interpretation. These concepts are pivotal in comprehending the hierarchical construction of sentences. Moreover, this framework accommodates sentences that have hitherto eluded explanation in existing research “why does not a what-noun clause undergo extraposition phenomenon? In essence, when a probe undergoes one-to-one feature checking, the more salient features emerge through the processes of merge and labeling. To conclude, even in case of the absence of a driving force for syntactic movement, the persistence of a component requiring feature checking beyond the checking stage results in errors in achieving full interpretation of extraposition.
