Abstract
This paper examines the influence of Heidegger’s philosophy on Kim Soo-young’s late poetry, focusing on his poems “Poem! Spittle” and “Anti-Poetry Poetics.” In the second half of his life, Kim was influenced by Heidegger’s philosophy of art, and he explored new directions in poetry. This influence is evident in two of his theories on poetry published in 1968. In “Poem! Spittle,” Kim borrows Heidegger’s concepts of “world” and “earth” from The Origin of the Work of Art to argue that reality and artistry are both opposed and complementary in literature and that this opposition and complementarity converge in a “tension” rather than a quantitative trade-off. On the other hand, in “Anti-Poetry Poetics,” Kim explores the possibility of a new poetry by using Heidegger’s emphasis on the “other breath” in his interpretation Rilke’s poetry and the claim of song as existence itself. The main content of “Anti-Poetry Poetics” contains two elements. The first element concerns the idea that a new poem can be achieved by circulating and expanding elements that are in a polarized relationship through “tension” and “struggle,” with Kim centering this idea on the concept of “antithesis.” The second concerns the “other breath” in Heidegger’s interpretation of Rilke and the assertion that song is existence itself. The latter is particularly important because it is the basis for explaining the changes in Kim’s poetry in the late 1960s. “Grass” has been understood as symbolizing “the people,” since Kim’s poetry after 1960 tends to be more participatory. However, if we consider his relationship to Heidegger’s philosophy of art, “grass” can be interpreted in a completely different sense, since it can be argued that, in the late 1960s, Kim was considering a different kind of poetry.
