Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the process through which the early 20th-century Confucian scholar Seong Wa Lee In-jae (省窩 李寅梓, 1870–1929) critically engaged with Greek philosophy by focusing on his work Godaeheurap cheolhakgobyeon (古代希臘哲學攷辨). Lee primarily references Cheolhagyoryeong (哲學要領) by Inoue Enryo (井上円了), which was translated into Classical Chinese by the Chinese intellectual Luo Boya (羅伯雅). Luo preserved the original meaning of the conceptual terms in the source text but also used Confucian terminology to clarify concepts that were ambiguous in Japanese or difficult for Confucian scholars to understand. Terms such as Lixue (理學) and Jizhong (執中) are examples of such adjustments, and through these terms and explanations, Lee is able to understand and discuss Greek philosophy as a form of philosophy comparable to Confucianism. Lee critiques the 10 philosophers who preceded Socrates, with his main focus being the origin of all things and worldview. In particular, he develops his argument around the issue of the relationship between the metaphysical and the physical, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of these philosophers within the framework of the Confucian principles of Li (理) and Qi (氣). Due to his engagement with philosophy through Japanese and Chinese translations, Lee occasionally proposes unique interpretations of certain terms. For example, his discussion of “truth” incorporates notions of Inshim (人心, human heart) and Doshim (道心, the heart of the Way) that diverge from the original context. Additionally, his understanding of “ethics” as the principle of “human morality” (人倫) departs from Western philosophical ideas. Moreover, Lee In-jae’s interpretation remains largely within the bounds of Zhu Xi’s Confucian discourse, and his recognition of the value of Greek philosophy is relatively modest, highlighting a limitation in his critical engagement. Nevertheless, Lee’s active interest in and critique of Western knowledge stands as one of the earliest examples of a Confucian scholar in Joseon actively engaging with and critiquing Western thought, which holds significant academic value.
