이글은 프랑스혁명기에 프랑스 서부 브르타뉴 지방을 중심으로 일어난 슈앙 운동이 불법적인 비적 활동도 농민들의 게릴라 운동으로만 그친 것도 아니었다는 점을 드러내기 위해 잠재적 슈앙이라 할 수 있는 브르타뉴 농민들의 반혁명의식, 장 슈앙 형제들의 ‘숭고한’ 게릴라 운동, 망명귀족으로서 슈앙 운동에 가담한 클로드 오귀스탱 테르시에의 활동, 브르타뉴 슈앙군 총사령관이었던 조르주 카두달의 불굴의 저항 등을, 관련 ‘회고록’을 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 슈앙은 어느 단계에 있었든지 모두 ‘종교’와 ‘국왕’이라는 대의를 위해 헌신한 사람들이었다. 슈앙의 반혁명이념은 뚜렷하였으니, 그것은 ‘종교’와 ‘국왕’이었다. 그들은 명실상부한 ‘가톨릭근왕군’이었다. 이러한 점에서, 이들의 저항은 단순한 반혁명(anti-Revolution)을 넘어 정치적인 대응혁명(counter-Revolution)의 단계로 나아갔다고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 이제까지 프랑스혁명사는 파리의 혁명가들 중심으로 짜여졌다. 그러나 파리의 혁명가들이 혁명사의 일부이듯이, 브르타뉴의 슈앙도 혁명사의 일부임은 분명하다. 그들의 증언을 경청하고 그들의 고통을 이해하는 것이 혁명에 대한 공정한 시각을 갖는데 필요할 것이다.
Abstract
This article aimed to examine the various facets of the Chouans mouvement by analysing the Memories written by the Chouans themselves. The Chouans was neither the illegal brigands nor the small sporadic guerilla groups. The Chouans were, no matter which stage they were on, devoted themselves to the cause of the catholic religion and king. It is evident that their counter-Revolutionary consciences were ‘religion’ and ‘king’. Their resistance is not a mere anti-Revolution but can be called as a Counter-Revolution. Key words : French Revolution, Chouans, Madame la marquise de La Rochejacquelein, Jean Chouans, Claude-Augustin Tercier, Georges Cadoudal So far, in Korea, the history of the French Revolution centered around the parisian revolutionaries. But as they are a part of the history of the revolution, so the Chouans are sure to be a part of it. It is necessary to hear their testimony to have a fair understanding of the French Revolution.
