초록
The aim of the present essay is to prove that the eighteenth-century Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico was a historicist, avant la lettre. Although the German historians and philosophers of history of late nineteenth century established the purpose, object, and methods of historical discipline, and thus obtained the name of the founders of historicism, it was Vico who first paved the way for that nomenclature. His theory of verum ipsum factum, that is, the true and the made are the same, in particular, played a pivotal role in differentiating humanities from the natural science, a feat usually attributed to the German historicists like Wilhelm Dilthey, Wilhelm Windelband and Heinrich Rickert. Moreover, Vico's use of philological method anticipated that of the Verstehen, normally associated with Dilthey. To ascertain these points, this essay first scanned the European historiography roughly from positivism to historicism, and then went on to summarize the basic tenets of the main German historicists. It then clarified Vico's theory of verum ipsum factum, to show that it has elective affinity to the expositions of the German historicists. As a conclusion, it stated that although in Germany Vico scholarship went on its own sake to use Vico as a forerunner of German historicism, it is another example of the fecundity of the thought of Giambattista Vico.
Abstract
The aim of the present essay is to prove that the eighteenth-century Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico was a historicist, avant la lettre.
