Abstract
This paper is focused on examining the trireme service as political education for thetes and then clout to make democracy a reality for the thetes citizens. In the late sixth century, thetēs citizens lacked the leisure or mindset needed to make the most of the new possibilities of political participation. They lacked such qualities as self-confidence, and less tangibly the ability to imagine themselves as part of an active political community. However, after 462/461 B.C., they were well on their war to acquiring those qualities. The main catalyst of change was the growth of the Athenian fleet, in which their manpower played an important role. In 483 B.C., Athens built about 100~200 triremes at Themistokles' disposal. The militarization of the thetēs, as the persian invasion, initiated as an exceptional measure in a nation emergency. After 480 B.C. they had contributed decisively to saving their city and opening for it the path to hegemony and power. In victory at sea, thetēs may gradually have gained pride and self-confidence. The experience of rowing in a trireme inspired an ethos of communal activity and it shaped their collective consciousness. As oarsmen, helmsmen, boatswains, lookouts and the ship's carpenters, petty officers in the Athenian trireme, that experience contributed particularly to the political education of thetes. The Athenian navy fleet educated them in solidarity, equality, and freedom. Its made dēmokratia and isokratia, isonomia, isegoria. The Athenians had a notion of equality before the law. Athens developed a democracy based on the idea of individual autonomy through collective action. Therefore, that experience at the trireme served for democratic politics and made democratic discourse. I hope to emphasize that the experience of at the trireme shaped their collective consciousness. My view coincides with Strauss' argument that service in the trireme ignited the thetēs political consciousness by offering them a practical education.
