Abstract
Mushinyeokokchuan(戊申逆獄推案) contains all the statements of rebel forces that participated in the Mooshin Revolt(戊申亂) in 1728(fourth year of King Yeongjo's reign), thus holding significant value as a historical material. An analysis of 291 individuals' records in the book will thus help to figure out whether the noblemen took the lead in the insurrection or the rabble including military officers and servants played huge roles in it. Such efforts will shed clear light on the nature of Mooshin Revolt, which had been understood to be mixed between those insurrections at the level of faction politics and those as part of popular movements. Under the research goal, the investigator analyzed Mushinyeokokchuan and found the followings: first, the records about the vocations of rebel forces in the book tell that noblemen were overwhelming at 169 with the exception of 91 whose vocations were unknown, which confirms the perspective that the noblemen took the lead in the Mooshin Revolt or that investigated the Mooshin Revolt at the level of faction policies. Second, there were people with vocations other than nobility including six military officers, eight Jungin(中人), five Yangin(良人) and 12 servants. In most cases, the servants simply ran errands for their masters. Those findings raise a need to reconsider the perspective that the rabble played a leading role in the development of the insurrection or that investigated the Mooshin Revolt as part of popular movements. Third, the investigator reviewed Yeoju, Yongin and Chungju areas, where there were many members of rebel forces according to the records of Mushinyeokokchuan, and found a pattern of two or three anti-Noron line families forming an alliance with the same faction members and their relatives by marriage and joining the rebel forces in those areas. Finally, the biggest family clan in the book was the Jo family of Sunchang, which was followed by the Min family of Yeoheung, the Na family of Naju, the Mok family of Sacheon, the Lee family of Jeonju, and the Park family of Bannam in the order. When they were distinguished according to the faction tendencies, the Namin line included the Jo family of Sunchang, the Min family of Yeoheung, the Na family of Naju, and the Lee family of Jeonju, whereas the Soron Junso line included the Mok family of Sacheon and the Park family of Bannam. The Jo family of Sunchang, the Min family of Yeoheung, the Na family of Naju, and the Lee family of Jeonju in the Namin line were relatives by marriage to one another. In short, it is reasonable to admit the participation of the rabble in the development of Mooshin Revolt in 1728, but it is quite unreasonable to do a broad interpretation of their participation and define the insurrection as a popular movement. The noblemen, especially those of Namin and Soron Junso lines, took the center in the Mooshin Revolt with strong solidarity among the Namin members as relatives by marriage.
