Abstract
This study examined the transport process to Busan and reception of the drifting Japanese before their return to Japan through the Chosun Journal of the Floating. The examined contents can be summarized as follows. First, regulations of ‘other islands of various Honam or Youngdong provinces’ were applied to the transport process of the Yasuda party from the landing site of Seocheon in the South Chungcheong Province to Busan. Following this, after receiving inquiries from a munjungkwon(問情官) sent from Seoul, they moved to Dadaepo using delivery ship methods where transports are transferred to Chosun ships and after a month, were transferred to Wuampo. Second, rice and miscellaneous articles were provided by each temporary place of stay beginning from their landing site. Of the rice and miscellaneous articles, the standard amount of rice was 3 does per person a day and three columns of firewood were provided for each ship. However, there were cases where these basic provisions of reception were not received in some areas. In addition, vegetables, salt, fish, and chicken meat were provided and when separate requests were made, the items were mostly provided so the Yasuda party was satisfied in their drifting relief goods. Third, food receptions were sometimes provided in the form of banquets at landing sites and temporary places of residence. Basically, there were regulations for the Dongnaebu to provide feasts before the return to Japan so the Yasuda party received banquet food receptions. Such receptions were provided in a more hospitable manner to the party of Yasuda compared to general drifters as he was a mid-level military officer by request of the Dongnaebusa. Also, the fact that the landing sites also provided banquet food separately in the court shows that the reception of drifters was not equal for every party. In addition to official food receptions by regulation in landing sites and temporary places of stay, special food receptions were provided to the Yasuda party in the form of feasts and Yasuda was especially pleased with the reception given by the governor general of Biinhyun, which was a landing site.
