조선시대 선현들의 지리산 유람은 유람자가 처한 현실적 기반에 따라 지리산에 대한 인식이 다르게 표출되었다. 현재까지 발굴된 100여 편의 지리산유람록을 중심으로 그들의 유람 동기를 일별해 보면, 대체로 ① 지리산권역에 부임하거나 공무로 왔다가 지리산을 유람하는 경우 ② 순수하게 지리산의 명성을 듣고 원거리에서 찾아오는 경우 ③ 지리산 속이나 자락에 살면서 오르는 경우로 분류할 수 있다. ①과 ②의 인물이 지리산을 우리 민족의 靈山이자 우리나라 최고의 名山으로 인식하는 반면, ③의 인물에게 있어 지리산은 가까이 있기에 늘 敬畏하면서도 쉽게 찾아 나서지 못하는, 그렇지만 언제나 마음속에 들어와 있는 그런 존재이다. 때문에 이들의 유람록에는 지리산 밖에서 우러르기만 하다가 한 번 오르는 이들과 달리, 지리산에 대한 지나친 칭송이나 유람에 대한 過한 기대감보다는 그저 내 고장에 있으니 오른다는 담박한 표현들이 자주 보인다. 청계 양대박은 ③에 속하는 인물로, 지리산 자락인 남원에 거주하면서 인접한 지역인 인월→함양을 거쳐 군자사와 백무동 코스로 지리산을 유람하였다. 일생 네 번의 유람 기록이 전하는데, 모두 자신의 거주지 남원에서 지리산과의 용이한 지리적 접근성을 충분히 활용하여 인근의 지리산권역을 유람하였고, 그의 유람록 「두류산기행록」에 나타난 지리산 인식 또한 그가 처한 현실적 기반에 준하여 나타나고 있다.
Abstract
The Joseon sages expressed their perceptions of Mt. Jiri differently according to their situations in reality after traveling to the mountain. Their motivations for traveling to the mountain were categorized into three based on about 100 travel journeys of the mountain discovered so far: ① they traveled to the mountain after being appointed as a public official in the area or visiting the area on a public mission; ② they traveled a long distance to climb the mountain, being sheerly driven by the mountain's reputation; and ③ they climbed the mountain, living in the mountain or at the foot of the mountain. Those who traveled to the mountain for the reasons of ① and ② saw it as the spiritual mountain of the Joseon people and as the nation's most celebrated mountain, whereas those of ③ always kept their admiration and awe for the mountain since it was close to them. However, it was not easy for them to climb the mountain, which always claimed a spot in their minds. Thus their travel journeys of the mountain often contain candid expressions including "It is in my area, and thus I climb it" instead of excessive praises about the mountain or overestimated expectations for the journey by those who got a chance to climb it after years of admiring it in other regions. Falling in the category of ③, Cheonggye Yang Dae-bak lived in Namwon at the foot of Mt. Jiri and took a course to it via Inwol and Hamyang near the mountain and via Gunjasa and Baekmudong. He left total four travel journeys of the mountain, which all describe the Mt. Jiri area near his place as he took advantage of the great geographical access to the mountain from his place in Namwon. His perceptions of the mountain in his travel journey, Travel Journey of Mt. Duryu, were also based on his situations in reality.
