조선조는 외국과 어떻게 소통했을까? 소통 부재의 불행한 시대를 맞이하여, 조선조가 외국과 어떻게 소통하였는지 그 양상과 내용을 한문학의 유산을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 조선을 방문한 많은 문관 사신들이 조선에 반하여 열렬한 팬이 되어 돌아갔다. 그 비결을 한두 마디로 정리할 수는 없지만, 過恭非禮라는 말처럼 무조건적인 예우와 막대한 예물이 아니었음은 분명하다. 오히려 풍부한 학식과 뛰어난 詩才, 그리고 훌륭한 인품으로 이들을 경탄시키고 압도하기도 하면서, 따질 것은 따지고 바로잡을 것은 바로잡는 당당함, 그리고 국빈에게 조선의 진심을 보이고 조선을 이해시키고자 한 그 ‘정성’이 이들을 감동시켰기 때문일 것이다. 소통의 내용에 있어서, 명은 ‘조선은 명의 번국이다’는 메시지를, 조선은 ‘조선은 독립국이다’라는 서로 다른 메시지를 전달하고자 하였다. 이러한 행위는 경우에 따라 충돌을 야기할 수도 있지만, 조선은 이를 슬기롭게 넘겨 명을 국력이 강한 대국으로서 존중하면서도 자국의 주권을 유지할 수 있었다. 소통이란 일방통행이 아니라 쌍방통행이 되어야 하고, 이를 통해 서로 깊이 이해할 수 있어야 한다. 자기들만의 소통이 아니라 모두의 소통이 되어야 한다. 이 지구에는 수많은 나라들이 존재하고 수많은 갈등이 존재하며 앞으로도 그러할 것이다. 하지만 역시 서로 존중하며 서로를 이해하고자 욕심을 버리고 ‘정성’을 다한다면 그 갈등이 줄어들지 않을까 생각해본다.
Abstract
What was the real phase of communication between Korea and foreign countries in the Jeseon dynasty? While undergoing an unhappy age of communication lack, I tried to examine the feature and contents of international communication between Jeseon and Ming with a focus on the written heritage of Chinese literature. Miny Chinese civil official envoys of Ming who once visited Jeseon used to go back to China as hearty devotees of Jeseon after they were charmed by it in many respects. Though it is not easy to point out the reason in few words, it is clear that it was not just caused by cordial reception and a large amount of presents. Rather, what impressed them most were affluent academic knowledge, fine personality, dignified attitude and true heart of Korean officials including the king they contacted, by which they could make Chinese guests understand Jeseon deeply. The main content of communication between both countries was 'Joseon is a tributary of Ming' from Chinese side, while 'Jeseon is an independent country' from Korean side. Although this sort of thought and behavior could cause serious conflict, Joseon met the situation wisely to keep its sovereignty while treating Ming dynasty modestly as a big, mighty country. The communication would be proper when it is interactive and reciprocal for the deeper understanding of each other. The world has been full of conflicts among countries and will be so too in the future. However, it is expected that the conflict would be lessened when we make every effort for it while treating each other with sincere respect and understanding.
