Abstract

This paper is an attempt to figure out the features in understanding XinJingFuZhu of Toegye's school in their middle period by analyzing 18 related writings published after Lee-Hwang's direct students. After Lee-Hwang's SimKyungHuRon, there was no actual advanced discussion about XinJingFuZhu among his students including Cho-Mok. Meanwhile, Lee-yee and his students had actively engaged in critical discussion on XinJingFuZhu, which later had been focused on the criticism against Lee-Hwang's view and came to fruition with Song-Siyeol's SimKyeongSeogEu. Understanding XinJingFuZhu of Toegye's school in their middle period shows two distinctive characteristics in this historical background. First, it was an aggressive confrontation against the criticism from Kiho school centered around SimKyeongSeogEu. Second, it was succeeding to and strengthening the view and the attitude of Lee-Hwang. These features appeared in understanding XinJingFuZhu of Toegye's school in their middle period can be understood as countermeasures against the political and academic crisis where Lee-yee and his followers started to take over the initiative in studies and take control of political power.
