Abstract

This study, separating intellectuals from numerous characters in the novel Land, explored their counter-reality measures, thereby showing how the author dealt with 'history' and 'fiction,' which are two axes of a history novel, or 'fact' and 'story.' The author offered intellectuals an ability of confirming, understanding, and analyzing historical facts. Without intellectuals, Land could only be a novel, not a history novel. The author explained the background of the age through the voice of intellectuals, and she had its historical facts confirmed. As the story goes towards the latter part, most readers find that its density becomes less. One of the reasons is its main characters are moving to the group of intellectuals from underlying people. Intellectuals mostly speak louder in logic than in practice. So the novel, as it moves forward, takes more talks and less events. It is rather regrettable that it failed to maintain a sense of balance between intellectuals and non-intellectuals to the very end. However, it is recognized that the author, as this study explored in several directions, put intellectuals on the stage in a wide variety of ways and also described their counter-reality measures differently, trying to tell the situation of that period more dynamically and precisely. Verisimilar description of intellectuals is a valuable product of the author's tenacious efforts to be biased to neither way of 'a novel' as a fiction and 'a historic novel' based on facts. Although intellectuals didn't play a big role in the aspect of fictional interests, they were indispensible for figuring out the whole stream of Japanese occupation by force. The author, by way of clarifying characterization about a multit! ude of intellectuals, made them living figures; in addition, she made Land an ever- lasting work transcending periods.
