섬진강 유역의 방언은 동남방언과 서남방언이 교차하여 두 방언이 서로 영향을 주고 받는 전이지대로서의 모습을 보여주고 있다. 이 지대에는 두 방언 중 우세한 형태가 상대방 지역까지 밀고 들어간 모습이 있지만, 우리의 주목을 끄는 형태는 두 방언의 혼성형이라고 할 수 있는 변이형태이다. 또 이 지역은 양쪽 방언의 영향 관계가 아닌 독자적인 방언형이 분포하는 모습을 보여주고 있어 우리의 관심을 끈다. 이러한 것들로 미루어 보아 이 지역은 특징적인 방언지대로서 앞으로의 변화방향 등을 미루어 연구할 가치가 높은 지역이다.
Abstract
The dialect of Seomjingang district is shown to us some characteristics of the transition area. Seomjingang dialect is formed of the contact of the Southeast dialect and the Southwest dialect. The prominent form of the two dialects affects the other dialect greatly. Especially we notice that there are variations which are mixed forms of the two dialects. And this district has the independent dialect which is irrelevant of the two dialects. Therefore, we can infer that this district keep the distinct dialect. We can predict the variants of the dialects of the other districts when the two forms collide, if we make a careful study of the characteristics of the contact dialects such as Seomjingang dialect. In addition, we can have the hint of the developing process of Korean and the history of the Korean dialects, if we keep on making a deep investigation of these phenomena.
