The purpose of this study is to explore the phonological system and phonetic variation of vowels in the dialect area of the Seomjin River basin based on the experimental phonetic methodology. For this purpose, sentence reading experiments were conducted targeting Gurye, Gwangyang, and Hadong regions, and vowel pronunciation and formants were analyzed. The results of the study are as follows: In the Gurye and Gwangyang regions, /ㅟ/ and /ㅚ/ were rarely pronounced as monophthong, and in the Hadong region, /ㅟ/ and /ㅚ/ did not exist as monophthong. /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/ are distinguished in the Gurye, Gwangyang, and Hadong regions, but /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/ can be distinguished only in the elderly group, and the youth group cannot distinguish between the two vowels. In addition, in the Hadong area, the older group could not distinguish /ㅡ/ and /ㅓ/, while the young group correctly distinguished two vowels. On the other hand, the monophthong of the dialects of the Seomjin River basin showed phonetic variation with generation as a variable. With the young generation as the main variable, /ㅡ/ was frontalized, and /ㅓ/ showed an increase in nF1 and a decrease in nF2. However, not all phonetic variations of vowels appeared with generation as a variable. Regardless of generation, the fact that /ㅜ/ and /ㅗ/ are distinguished by nF1 shows the dialectal conservatism of the Seomjin River basin dialect.
