이 글은 엄흥섭의 해방공간 소설에 대한 성격을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 해방공간의 현실을 분석하고, 해방공간에 쓴 단편소설을 현실과의 관련 속에서 살펴보았다. 귀환일기, 발전, 집없는 사람들에서는 귀환전재민들이 해방과 함께 조국으로 귀향하는 과정에서 겪어야 했던 어려움과 그 좌절을 형상화하였고, 빙야, 쫓겨온 사나이, 관리공장에서는 조선이 완전히 독립되지 않았다는 현실과 인민에 의한 완전한 독립의 의지를 강하게 드러내었다. 그리고 악수, 자존심, 봄 오기 전에서는 남한의 단독정부 수립과 미 군정의 실패 등으로 인한 전망이 보이지 않는 현실에서 결국 좌절하고 마는 지식인의 모습을 형상화하였다. 따라서 엄흥섭이 창작한 해방공간의 소설은 귀환 전재민의 귀향과 좌절, 일제잔재의 청산과 독립에 대한 열망, 그리고 좌절되는 삶을 형상화한 것으로 규정할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This thesis is designed to define characteristics of Euhm Hueng-sub's novels written right after the liberation of Korea from Japan in 1945. For that end, this paper analyzed his short stories written during the period in the context of the general public's lives. The writer depicted difficulties and frustrations of war refugees returning to Korea after the country's liberation in such novels as 「The Journals on Returning Home」, 「Development」 and 「The Homeless」. Besides that, in novels like 「The Field of Ice」, 「A Man Ousted」 and 「Management Factory」, he also described the grim reality that despite the general public's strong determination for full independence, the nation was still under the influence of the colonial period. In addition, Euhm portrayed the intellectuals frustrated by the rule by the U.S. military administration and the unilateral establishment of government by South Korea in novels like 「Handshaking」, 「Pride」 and 「Before Spring Comes」. In conclusion, his novels mentioned above showed war refugees' home-retuning and their difficulties, the public desire for removing the vestiges of Japanese Imperialism and securing full independence, and intellectuals' frustrations.
