문법화에 의해 조사의 기능이 바뀌고 이로 인해 조사가 중복될 수 있게 된다. 이 글은 이러한 관점에서 조사의 문법화 양상을 통해 조사의 유형이나 조사 중복 실현 원리를 알아본 것이다. 결론은 다음과 같다. 조사의 문법화에는 어휘가 조사로 문법화되는 경우와 문법 형태인 조사가 더 문법적인 조사로 문법화되는 경우가 있다. 어휘가 문법 형태(조사)로 문법화될 경우 일차로 문맥조사로 문법화된다. 문법 형태인 조사가 더 문법적인 조사로 문법화되는 경우에는 여러 가지가 있다. ①문맥조사는 의미역조사나 구조격조사로 문법화되기도 하고, 문맥조사 뒤에서 양태조사로 문법화되기도 한다. ②의미역조사는 의미역조사 뒤에서 양태조사로 문법화되기도 하고, 형태적 도상성 때문에 구조격조사로 문법화되기도 한다. 문법화의 이러한 양상으로 보아 국어 조사는 네 유형 즉, 문맥조사, 의미역조사, 구조격조사, 양태조사로 분류할 수 있다. 동일한 기능을 수행하는 조사가 중복으로 결합되는 것은 문법화로 조사의 기능이 달라지기 때문이다. 의미역조사나 문맥조사가 중복될 경우 뒤에 놓이는 의미역조사나 문맥조사가 양태조사로 문법화된다. 조사의 배열 순서도 문법화된 조사의 기능에 따라 결정된다. ①의미역조사는 문맥조사 앞에 놓인다. ②구조격조사는 의미역조사 뒤에 놓인다. ③양태조사는 조사 가운데 제일 마지막에 놓인다. 이는 국어 양태 표현이 지닌 보편적 특성이다. 이를 종합하면 국어 조사는 “의미역조사>문맥조사, 구조격조사>양태조사” 순으로 배열된다.
Abstract
It has been viewed that grammatization changes the function of nominal affixes and allows them to duplicate. From this view, this paper aims to examine types of nominal affixes and the principle of affix duplication. The paper involves two types of grammatization, in one of which words changes into affixes and in the other of which affixes change to more grammaticalized ones. Words are observed, in this paper, to be primarily grammatized into contextual affixes, whereas affixes are observed to be grammatized to more grammaticalized ones in two ways: one way in which contextual affixes are grammatized either to thematic or structural ones, or to modal ones after other contextual ones and the other way in which thematic affixes are grammatized either to modal ones after other thematic ones, or to structural ones due to the iconic form. These grammatization aspects suggest the division of Korean nominal affixes into contextual, thematic, structural, and modal ones. In this paper, the combination of affixes are suggested to be associated with grammatization in that the duplication of affixes are due to their differentiated functions by grammatization. According to this combinational principle, the second of duplicated thematic or contextual affixes are grammatized to modal ones. Also suggested is the linear order of affixes, which is determined by their functions differentiated by grammatization: (1) thematic affixes are followed by contextual ones, (2) structural affixes are preceded by thematic ones, and (3) modal affixes appears last of the affixes. That is, Korean nominal affixes are arranged linearly in the order of “thematic before contextual affixes” or “structural before modal affixes”, which is the universal characteristic of Korean modal expressions.
