Abstract
Purpose: This study examines the effects of core elements of Contact Improvisation (CI) on body perception and neuroplasticity from neuroscientific, physiological, and psychological perspectives. It aims to present CI as a foundational training method for essential human actions and as an academic basis for physical and neural development. Methods: A systematic literature review (SLR) of domestic and international databases, as well as major dance-related sources, was conducted to synthesize scientific evidence on CI. Result: Breathing, walking, and physical contact—fundamental to both CI and human life—were found to positively affect body perception and brain development. These elements induce neurophysiological changes, activate the vagus nerve, and strengthen brain-body communication. Improvisational practice further engages problem-solving, creative movement, and decision-making, stimulating multiple brain regions. Conclusion: The literature highlights both the artistic and scientific value of CI, suggesting its potential to enhance body perception and neuroplasticity. CI may thus serve as a foundation for integrated programs supporting physical and neural development.
