Abstract
In this study we examine the information contents of qualified audit opinion in terms of stock market response and bankruptcy outcome. The first hypothesis of this study is that the negative stock market response in the period surrounding bankruptcy announcement in firms received qualified audit opinion upon prior financial statements is lower than the negative stock market response in firms received unqualified audit opinion upon prior financial statements. The second hypothesis of this study is that firms received qualified audit opinion upon prior financial statements have lower reconstruction ratio than firms received unqualified audit opinion upon prior financial statements. Our sample consists of 96 firms that announced bankruptcy between the fiscal year of 1998 and 2001. To examine those hypotheses, we apply event study methodology and multiple regression analysis. Our empirical results are as follows. First, firms received qualified audit opinion upon prior financial statements experience significantly lower negative abnormal returns in the period surrounding bankruptcy announcement than unqualified audit opinion. Second, in the firms that previously received qualified audit opinion the ratio of liquidated firms is higher to the firms that previously received unqualified audit opinion. And the relation between the bankruptcy outcome and the audit opinion is positively significant in the multiple regression.
