Abstract

We compare the informational efficiency between the KOSPI index options market and its corresponding underlying stock markets and then analyze the trading behaviors of investors who may induce the informational discrepancy. Once a new information arrives at a specific market faster than the other, the inconsistency between two markets appears temporally. This inconsistency remains until this information is fully reflected in both markets. Based on this idea, we define the level of the price divergence of two markets as the difference between option-implied stock prices and its underlying KOSPI 200 index. Next we investigate the trading behaviors of individual, institutional and foreign investors as well as the price changes before- and after the highest- and lowest- price divergence periods. According to the results, the price divergence between the two markets does not remain over 1 trading day and the most price divergence seems to occur due to the noise information rather than qualitative information. In particular, in the presence of noise information, the options market requires at least two days to reach for the equilibrium price by its over-reaction to a noise, which indicates that the KOSPI 200 index options markets is less informative than the underlying market. Lastly, the price changes by a noise information is mainly driven by domestic institutional investors and individual investors herein provide the liquidity to the markets.
