Abstract
We examine whether Korean monetary policy changes affect the returns of stock portfolios formed on the basis of their value, size and past performance characteristics in a different manner, in other words, whether monetary policy is related with stock market anomalies in Korea, for the period from July 1999 through December 2013. The results are as follows. First, regarding value based portfolios, value portfolios are more sensitive to growth portfolios, implying the significance of the balance sheet channel. Second, regarding market value portfolios, small size company portfolios are more sensitive to big size portfolios, implying the significance of the bank lending channel. Third, regarding investment and profits based portfolios, more investment and profits company portfolios are more sensitive to less company portfolios, implying the significance of the balance sheet channel. Fourth, regarding past performance characteristic portfolios, we cannot find the consistency of excess sensitivity mechanism. As a conclusion, we can find that the credit channel mechanism of monetary policy is in active and thus monetary policy is one of the important factors of determining stock market returns and also closely related with stock market anomalies in Korea.
