Abstract
The main objective of the pater is to explore a regional strategy for the East Asian economies to achieve further liberalization of trade in services by looking at the case of telecommunications services. In fact, many East Asian countries have pursude bilateral as well as regional trade negotiations to further liberalize trade in telecommunications services. However, the actual outcomes of these negotiationsdid not go beyond the results of the WTO negotiations. The East Asian countries seem to be paying more attention to the protection of the domestic industry than to the economies of scale which can be achieved through liberalizing their domestic markets. This implies that forming a free trade agreement encompassing telecommunications services in EastAsian countries must share the vies that harmonization on technical standards, license procedures and regulations in the telecommunications industry would provide avery conducive environment for deeper regional liberalization to be pursued in the future. Another lesson from the European experiences is the fact that providing a regional infrastructure is crucial for development of the new entrats.
